Friend Friday: FADS

Let's be honest we all fall into fads whether we want to admit it or not. Skinny jean fad, jegging fad, Litas fad...list goes on. I mean I have def. falling in love with the Jeffrey Campbell fad, I know what a shocker a fashion blogger that loves JC shoes and owns a pair of Litas. But to be honest I was weary of jumping on the JC Litas bandwagon at first...then I got a pair and it's been non-stop love after that. I however missed a couple of the fads since they totally missed the mark with me...even though I feel like the crazy person when I just don't get it and everyone else seems to love it. I guess thats the thing about fads some people whether they hate it have to like it because it's the IT thing.

FRIEND FRIDAY: FADS
FADS

1. Do you ever see a fad hit the stores and immediately dislike it? Has that fad ever began to grow on you?
I was not about the Missoni Target line...I mean some of the stuff was cute but I wasn't DIEING over it like a lot of people were. Same with the Lanvin line, at first I did like it. I loved the editorial work they did but once I saw the construction in store I totally disliked it. Why would you spend $200+ on a designer line from H&M that was made poorly. I still can't get over that. Also the biggest fad that won't seem to go away is the Tory Burch flats. I'm sorry but they are ugly. I'm sure they are comfortable but I have a fair of simple blacl flats from Target that have lasted a few years now that cost me maybe $20. Tory Burch flats are so not appealing to me. I don't understand why EVERY woman has them in NYC.

A fad that has grown on me are UGGs. I was 100% against them...mostly bc of girls at my college that would wear them with short skirts and shorts during the spring time. It just look ridic. Then I got my first pair of UGGs and then I understood what it was about them. No they aren't the best looking pair of shoes but they do keep your feet warm during the winter and they are comfy. I would NEVER be caught dead wearing them outside of winter with shorts/mini skirt on.

2. Has the popularity of a certain piece of clothing or line ever convinced you to try on something (or purchase something) you dislike?

Besides UGGs I really can't think of anything else....

3. Have you ever changed your mind about a trend after seeing it around for a while?
Sure. At first the whole maxi dress/skirt trend I loved it. I really did but it's one of those things that I never thought I personally could pull off..until one day I saw a girl my age and my height on the train with a maxi dress on did I think I could pull it off.

Another trend is the fur vest. I never wanted one...never cared for it...but now I want one. I don't know if it's maybe my taste that has grown up or just seeing it everywhere. Sometimes it's hard to tell why you like something NOW when you didn't care for it earlier.

4. Do you feel a certain pressure to have specific items in your closet because 'everyone' else does?
hmmmmmmmm.....I don't know if it's becuase everyone else does...it's more of the more and more I see it the more and more I want them. That's what happened with the Litas I saw them once and was like O they are cute! And then I saw them EVERYWHERE and after seeing them multiple times I was like okay okay okay I HAVE TO GET THEM. So a little bite of want and a little bite of pressure i guess?

5. Be honest, what do you think of the Missoni line? Did you grab any items? Is it worth the eBay prices?
Like I said earlier...I wasn't a huge fan of the Missoni line. Some of it was a TOTAL miss for me. And some pieces were cute but I would never buy it/wear it.

I would NEVER pay the prices for a Target line that eBayers are selling it at. It's ridic and unfair. And not nice. I think it's actually very cruel. Just like I hate those sample sale buyers that buy EVERYTHING and then sell them on eBay at a ridic price. It's just totally unfair. Designers have these lines for a reason -- to bring it to those people who wouldn't be able to afford the REAL line. Designers have sample sales not only to get rid of whatever they have but it's also helpful for those that can't walk into Barneys and buy it in season off the rack. I mean come on.

Sunday Blow Outs and Brunch with Arrojo

Here's the thing with ARROJO Studio once you go there there's no going back to any other hair place. This past Sunday I was invited to go to their studio to enjoy a day of beauty for their Sunday Grand Opening (yes now they are open 7 days a week....their stylist don't sleep) and I got to take a guest with me. Of course, I had to take my mom because she deserves a day to herself especially after the summer she had putting up with my dad being out of work and being in out of the hospital due to his hip. She always puts my father and I first so she totally deserved to treat herself to some pampering. To bad I was a bit hungover (that's what I get for hanging out with all boys) and my mom had a slight cold so we couldn't dive into their brunch. It however did smell yummy, but we did take advantage of their beverages (I on the other hand opt for the fresh squeezed OJ while my mom had the Bellini...damn me).

Anyway since I got to take advantage of ARROJO's services in August and I'm still attempting to grow my hair out I didn't go all in for full service treatment but I did get their clear conditioning treatment and a blow out. Shiny hair! And a better blow out that I can ever do thanks to the lovely Inva!

But my mom on the other hand....got to enjoy ARROJO to the fullest..cut and color! My mother had extremely long beautiful hair that got WAY to out of control for her own good. Both my dad and I have been telling her to cut it for a long time and as soon as I got the email about this event I knew I was getting her to go one way or another. I'm really happy she came...and she was so brave. She got about 10 inches off, just enough to donate to locks of love! Caroline did a great job cutting her hair and styling it! She's a super sweetheart from Santa Cruz who is def. becoming a true New Yorker and is fantastic at what she does. I couldn't believe how great my mom looked even just after just getting the cut and before hitting the color.

The coloring was done by Rudy, who is a super cool dude who is a master stylist at ARROJO. He really brought back the life into my mom's hair. She's always had darker dirty blond hair and he really gave her a natural looking color. A little darker then what she is use to but definitely perfect for the winter.

PS my mom hates having her picture taken....she was ready to KILL me by the end of the day!

I still can't get over the way my mom looks. She's so beautiful and fun (and sometimes a little crazy but what moms aren't?) and I'm glad that she got to experience this with me. She's already saying that she's coming back with me to get the demi-permant coloring that we got invited to go to next month! I told you once you go to ARROJO there is no going anywhere else!

1 Piece 2 Ways: Halloween to Everyday

Halloween is right around the corner and you know what that means...costume time! This year lets try something different, instead of buying a new costume why not work with a functional piece that can work in your everyday life but can turn into a fun piece for Halloween with using everyday accessories. Here are a few ideas for this year's Halloween that won't break the bank!

Cleopatra
Cleopatra

The Everyday: The Forever21 Pleated Lamé Skirt ($18) can make any girl feel like Cleopatra during the day. The trick here is to not over accessorize your look. To get the Cleopatra feel pick a shirt like the Topshop embroidered shirt ($60). The embroidery on the shirt creates a bib look, something similar to a choker or thick collar necklace that she would have worn. Smaller accessories like the Zara rope belt, the ASOS leaf cuff, and Dorthy Perkins knot headband will give the whole look a Cleopatra feel without looking to much like a costume. Keep your shoes simple, a gold sandal or black heel will pull the whole look together.

For Play: Play up the look here! Now is our chance to really jazz things up. To bring out your sexy side (if you want) try a crop white top like the Topshop Vintage Embroidered Crop Top ($45). I you are insecure about doing a crop top then do a simple white tank top (don't do a rib top!). Go BIG and BOLD with your accessories. Do a wide tie belt that ties, stick with black and gold, like the Topshop Tassel Tie Belt ($68). Cuff bracelets and a chunky collar necklace will play up the Cleopatra look. To REALLY top off the look do a fun head piece like the Gold Chain and Green Drop Bead Headpiece ($40). This is the perfect piece to tie everything in and is a piece that you probably won't get to wear everyday but it's a funky piece to have. To pull the whole sexy look off do a bold gold shoe like the GUESS Shoes.

Gypsy
Gypsy

The Everyday: This Forever21 Color Block Midi Dress reminds me of Gucci's Spring 2011 collection. It's the purple that they choose and gold that is very reminsicent of the spring collection. This dress also has a very gypsy feel to it, again it's the color combo. To bring this dress into fall and still give it a fun playful gyspy feel try a dark red turban/headband like the Modlcoth Velveteen Habit Handband ($28). This headband can easily transition from outdoor wear to indoor wear, also red and gold is always a perfect combo. Sticking with the gyspy theme pair the look up with a gold pump, but don't go cheesy go classy like the Aldo Bremseth shoe ($60). This shoe is classic and can tansition from day to night. Instead of doing straight up bangles try something funky and sophisticated like the H&M watch bangles. It's has a gyspy feel thanks to that it's a pack of bangles but has a grown up look to it with the added watch effect. To keep the whole look grown up throw over a fitted black blazer like the ASOS Tailored Blazer with Power Shoulders ($119).

For Play: What gypsy is without her turban and bangles? Do a fun and funky turban like the Teal Luxe Turban Headband  by ROCK 'N ROSE ($28). The green color really stands out and will have a great twist to the dress. Since this dress is a little longer I would stay away from doing knee/mid-calf boots, but try to pair up the look with ankle booties. If you want to toughen up the look try a bootie that has a buckle or ties up. Do a think cuff bracelet like the Topshop Ridge Metal Cuff ($30). The bigger the better, the more bangles the better. Also go big with a big ring, stay with the rustic feel like the ASOS Just Access Popo Long Slim Ring ($22). To finish off the whole look do a bold red lip!

What are you guys doing for Halloween? Any costume ideas?

Meet the Pillow Boot by Cougar Boots

My friends over at Cougar Boots sent me over a pair of the new Pillow Boots to test out. Can I just say that I'm in total love with them. It seriously was love at first glance, as soon as I saw the style online I knew they were going to be awesome. I have known about this product review since a little before August and have been waiting since for their arrival (they arrived a few days before my bday so it was like a little birthday present). So here I am to share them with you!!

These boots have a masculine look but also have a feminine appeal to it-- thanks to the red lining on the inside. It really does feel like you are stepping into a snug pillow when you put these boots on, hence the name. They are perfect for the winter, thick and warm...and very comfortable. Easy for trekking over mouns of NYC snow or for those bitter cold days. They easily go well with a pair of skinny jeans or tights with a skirt/dress. I like that you can play with the look of the shoes and can really build a whole outfit around the boots. These boots gave me an idea to play with a feminine lumberjack. I took my Urban Outfitters black pleated skirt and turned it into a dress and took a pair of my flirty suspender tights to play with the feminine side. To add to the lumberjack masculine appeal I threw my vintage Ralph Lauren plaid men's shirt over the skirt turned dress. Added feminine accessories like the Target Owl Belt and BCBG clutch to keep the look girly but played it cool with my pair of round Ray-bans.

These bad boys are going to take me through winter and I can not wait to fully rock them. Okay maybe I can since I'm not ready for snow...or full on winter just yet. But the Pillow Boots are a MUST HAVE for anyone who lives in a cold climate region.

PS I would love if you guys take this survey! Matchstick will donate $2 to the Red Cross with EACH COMPLETED survey!

Nailspiration: Dalmatian Print

Dalmatian

Who doesn't love Dalmatians? And who doesn't love the movie 101 Dalmatians? Apparently so does Unique, Topshop, Burberry Prorsum, and Sonia Rykiel. Taking the leap into this pattern might be a little scary...so to test the waters with the trend I decided to try it out on my nails first!

What I Used:

1. Take your white nail polish and do two coats on each of your nails. Then wait till it drys fully to start spotting.

2. Take your thin nail polish brush or nail art pen in black and start spotting your nails. Make sure to do different sizes. The great thing about the dalmatian spots is that they aren't perfect circles, so don't worry about being perfect!

3. To polish off the whole look just do a top coat! And TA-DA! You have Dalmatian print nails!

Would you guys try this look?
