Inspirational Monday: Black Swan

Photobucket

Call I can say is Rodarte Rodarte Rodarte....

After seeing Black Swan all I wanted to do was put on a tutu and do some ballet. Mind you I only took ballet for about a month when I was about 6 and quit because I hated it. But thanks to the sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy they created a beautiful romantic world of tutus and feathers while in the midst of a sick twisted plot. Even as Natalie Portman transforms into the Black Swan the costume is still elegant and darkly romantic. These costumes are subtle but truly make the movie. Isn't this what ballet is all about? Elegance, beauty, grace, romance.

Sweater: Smitten by Michael Simon
Short: DIY Pac Sun jeans
tights: the Gap

The bf and I just got back from seeing Black Swan. O M G Natalie Portman plays a fantastic crazy chick and Mila Kunis party girl character was perfect for her. If you haven't seen it yet go see it now!! I don't want to give anything away just in case you haven't seen it but this movie should win an Oscar and so should Natalie Portman.

But of course once again it's snowing in New York and we walked 4 blocks to one of our favorite bars for dinner to be told that the sitting area was reserved for a party...so we walked all the way back home just so we can order in from there...in the snow. As soon as I got home I kicked off my rainboots, grabbed my favorite Snoopy mug and made myself hot coco. Every time it snows all I can think about is hot coco with marshmallows.

Also how great is this sweater!?! This was another one of my awesome fines at the sample sale. Yes those are beads and yes it's totally 1980s. I can not get enough of it! I want to wear it all the time! It's so comfortable and just amazing!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far!

Hoodie: American Eagle
Shirt: Free People
Jeggings: Aeropastle
Shoes: Christian Siriano for Payless
Rings: Claires

I went to a sample sale Wednesday night with a friend from work where I picked up a couple of awesome finds including this Free People lace shirt! It has this really romantic girly look but I wanted to play it down a bit today, so I paired it up with my poncho hoodie from American Eagle but kept it glam with the shoes. To be honest these shoes are not that comfortable and aren't easy to walk in. They are very clunky and feel awkward but I still love them. They are so sleek and posh especially for Payless shoes. Of course after a storm like we had yesterday I didn't wear these outside and well doubt I ever will.

Thank god today is Friday! This weekend is so action packed but it does include seeing Black Swan and a dinner party at my friend's house. So there are a few things I'm looking forward to this weekend! How about you guys, any fun plans for the weekend?

Cardigan: Free People
Shirt: H&M
Velvet Legging Stir-ups: American Apparel
Flats: no name
Earrings: Urban Outfitters

Velvet leggings is the way to go this winter. They are so warm, and the feel and look great! They are so easy to pair up with pretty much everything. Basic shirts for a casual look or even a dresser top to give it a more glammed up look. I took the casual route today with my H&M white shirt and Free People cardigan. I of course threw the ballet flats in my bag and wore my snow boots outside. Flats + snow = frozen toes. No thank you. I'm still looking forward to the warmer days especially now with all the spring lines coming out. It's so hard not to buy pretty wedges and spring dresses but these items will sit in my closet till March/April. Even though I am guilty of buying spring items already even though it's in preparation for my Miami trip.

Have you guys bought any Spring items yet?

Valentine's Day Fashion for the Budgetnista

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Yes everyday you should show your love to your loved ones but Hallmark needed another day to make money and we needed another reason to get all dressed up. Whether you are spending a day with your sweetie or spending the day with your friends why not spend it looking chic and fabulous.

Here are a few fun, inexpensive, and functional ideas for whatever you have planned:

V-Day

Outfits from left to right: 1. Forever21 Cherry Blossom Mesh Dress: $25 - forever21.com; H&M Blush Cardi: $20 hm.com; Topshop Bead On Chain Drop Earrings: $18 - topshop.com; Topshop Clever Bunny: $28 - topshop.com; Topshop Pink Structured Bow Contrast Strap Bag: $60 - topshop.com; Modcloth Herring-bow-ne Necklace: $18 - modcloth.com; ASOS PARTYTIME Peep Toe Platform Shoes: $78 - asos.com; 2. ASOS WHITE Silk Hitch Hem Shirt: $86 - asos.com; Topshop Large Rose Quartz Ring: $28 - topshop.com; American Apparel Riding Pants: $74 - americanapparel.net; Forever21 Floral Oxford Shoes: $27 - forever21.com; ASOS Patent Trim Lady Bag: $56 - asos.com; 3. Nasty Gal Snow Leopard Cardi: $68 - shopnastygal.com; ASOS Quilted Suedette Lock Bag: $26 - asos.com; Topshop White Roll Sleeve Burnout Tee: $30 - topshop.com; Nasty Gal Censored Maxi Skirt: $68 - shopnastygal.com; Zara Asymmetric Court Shoe: $110 - zara.com; Modcloth Heart Songs Necklace: $18 - modcloth.com; Wind Swept Gem Post Earring: $14 - urbanoutfitters.com

If you and your sweetie are going out to a lovely dinner or doing something cute like a picnic why not girly it up with a lace dress like the Forever21 Cherry Blossom Mesh Dress ($25). Match your lace dress with some vintage esq and pale colored accessories like the Topshop Pink Structured Bow Contrast Strap bag ($60) and Topshop Clever Bunny Ring ($28). Do a dark tone shoe this way the whole look doesn't have a washed out look to it.

For something more casual try a long silk shirt ASOS WHITE Silk Hitch Hem Shirt ($86) paired up with riding pants like the American Apparel Riding Pants ($74). With this look you have the option of keeping it totally casual by keeping the shirt untucked or you can tuck the front of your shirt in and leave the back out so that it's hanging loosely. For this look pair it up with a pair of oxfords like the floral print oxfords from Forever21 ($27). This keeps the look causal and functional, especially if you prefer flats. If you want to keep this look minimal do a simple accessory like a ring, earrings, or a bracelet. Do nude and pale accessories to match the silk top and contrast with the dark tones of the pants. It will also pick up off the floral colors of the oxfords.

Try a sexy look but not giving it all away. We all want to be sexy for our special someone but sometimes keeping it a little hiding is always fun. Try a sheer maxi skirt that has a short lining like the Nasty Gal Censored Maxi Skirt ($68). This will give them a little sneak preview with a hint of surprise. If you want to show your wild side do a animal print cardigan like the Nasty Gal Snow Leopard Cardigan ($68). Keep your top simple so it doesn't take away from the skirt and the cardigan. Do an elegant simple pump and nothing beats Zara's new collection. Zara's Asymmetric Court Shoe ($110) is elegant and oh-so-sexy. This heel will help keep the look looking sophisticated. Do simple earrings and a longer necklace. A simple quilted black bag like ASOS Quilted Suedette Lock Bag ($26) will help pull the whole look together.

You should feel sexy in these looks and on this day. It doesn't matter if you are single, with someone, or in that complicated status spend the day with who ever you love and spend it looking your fabulous.

PS If you are looking for budget friendly make-up ideas my lovely friend Christine started her own blog called Drugstore Finds. She reviews drug store products like Wet 'n Wild and Covergirl. Stop on by her blog to find some awesome products (maybe you'll even want to try some of the products out for V-day) and leave her some love!

Inspirational Monday: Tattoos

My friend at work got another set of tattoos and every time I see someone get a new ink that all I want. I have two already (the two below are my tats) but I want another one so badly.

Photobucket
This was my first tattoo, I got it August of 2008 which was my junior year of college. Music has always been major roll in my life. I spent most of my high school days going to concerts with my best friend. We were one of the few that knew who bands like Plain White Ts and Fall Out Boy before they made it big. Music will always be a major roll in my life.

Photobucket
This would be my second tattoo which I got August of 2009 (senior year of college). This wasn't my orignal idea, I wanted to get a anchor tattoo but once my aunt passed away that summer I decided to get this instead. So the heart is for my aunt who passed away from breast cancer. She will always be part of me and will always be my hero.
Both this photos were taken in 2009 by one of the professors at my college who does photography.

I've been playing around with a couple of ideas and a couple of placements. Right now I'm thinking a small Snoopy tattoo on my wrist, I was thinking about getting him on my other ankle but I scratched that idea since I might want something else on that foot. There are a few ideas along with snoopy floating around in my head like an anchor (which I've wanted forever now), a clothes hanger, and a song lyric. So many ideas and so many placements. It's so inspiring to see other people's tattoos because you really get an idea for some good placements. Even some that I never even thought about until I saw them.

I love that tattoos have become less taboo especially in fashion. It's great to see models, like Freja and Abbey Lee, sporting tattoos. Tattoos are just another way of expressing yourself in a more permanent way.

What do you guys think of tattoos? Do you have any? Do you want one?

Indoor Pop-Up Park at Openhouse Gallery

Openhouse Gallery, in New York City, has this fantastic Indoor Pop-Up Park down in NoLita. Openhouse Gallery house exhibitions, installations, and even pop-up retails. This pop-up park installation is called Park Here. They have everything from grass (artificial), to trees, to a pond! This space has light boxes to give the effect of sunlight and summer warmth. These light boxes help relieve any symptoms of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) that you might be feeling. They even have local food venues set up so you can have a snack while enjoying the atmosphere. Thanks to Urban Daddy this venue is also hosting movie and a dinner nights, but at an expensive price. But for free you can enjoy some yoga in the park. Sadly, this park is only open till January 30th. If you're in New York anytime before then or if you live in the city I recommend stopping by: 201 Mulberry Street.

The boyfriend and I had a chance to stop on by yesterday. To our surprise so many people were taken it in. A lot of people even borough picnic blankets and food from outside. It is defientally like going to Central Park and sitting out in the Great Lawn in the summer. Trying to find a prime sitting place was hard even if it was 4:30 in the afternoon. We ended up finding a spot amongst the leaves. To be completely honest I thought this whole idea was swell. It is one great way to get over your winter blues. We didn't really plan ahead since we just wanted to stop by before meeting my family for dinner but we enjoyed ourselves by playing scrabble via the iPhone and sitting and relaxing.

Katie Holmes on ELLE's February Cover

Have you guys seen this on the stands? Honestly, I hesitated picking this up because of the cover but like I learned in grade school "never judge a book by it's cover". I truly dislike this cover, okay more borderline hate this cover. Yes, hate is a strong word but this cover is awful. There is nothing enticing to this picture. It doesn't scream pick me up and read me. What were they thinking when they dressed Katie Holmes? It's a like a bad throwback to the 1990's. There is nothing stylish. It's plain and it's boring. Also, what is going on with the pants? The flap is bent over on the left side but straight up on the right side. Was this on purpose or did the stylist not notice? When I see covers like this all I can think is that this was the best shot of her that they could get. Which I find hard to believe, I haven't flipped to the Katie article but I really hope they styled her better.

What do you think of this cover?

After my post yesterday on jewelery I felt inspired so I gathered together some of my girly vintage inspired jewelery and played around with pale colors and dark tones. It was to gross outside to have actually worn my shoes out so I carried them in my bag to work and just wore them around in the office. I'm so tired of the snow and rain. I just want to wear my pretty shoes and my highest heels. Why does winter have to be so cruel!? And yes that is a Marc Jacob's bag. Monday the boyfriend and I went shopping, okay I went shopping and the boy came along for the ride. I had decided that after I got my gift card to Bloomingdale's from my uncle for Christmas that I was going to get this Marc by Marc Jacob's bag. So I combined all my Christmas money with my gift card and bought the bag that I have been lusting over for months now. I am a proud owner of a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag! It's so nice to splurge on yourself every now and then. I honestly believe its a good thing to buy yourself something, especially something that you've really wanted.

Have you splurged on yourself lately? Or is there anything you've been eying up?

Inspirational Tuesday: Jewelry

Photobucket

I love accessories, especially jewelry. Jewelry can help enhance a look, give it flair, or even totally change your outfit. Something so simple like a necklace can give your outfit a face lift, even if it's a subtle change. Simple pieces can give your look a direction. You can add edginess to a look by wearing spike bracelets or give your look an earthy look by wearing feather jewelry. Instead of buying a whole new wardrobe sometimes all you have to do is buy some jewelry. Even then you don't need to spend a fortune on some new pieces. Even digging through your old jewelry boxes you can uncover some pieces you forgot about, or try your mother's or grandmother's jewelry box to discover finds without a price tag on it. Flea markets are another the perfect place to find unique jewelry.

Where do you guys buy your jewelry from? Do you have any pieces that you really love?

Modalistas Grand Opening Event

Thursday night I went to the grand opening event of Modalistas at the Limelight Market here in New York City. The Limelight Market is one of the most unique shopping centers and with a history to match it. The Limelight was built 1844-1845 and was originally an Episcopalian Church. In the 1970s it was merged with two other churches and was reconstructed and sold to the Odyssey House, a drug rehabilitation program. Because of money problems the Odyssey House was sold to Peter Gatien, a night club owner, in 1982 which was renamed the Limelight. The Limelight was one of the biggest and well known night clubs in the city. Of course as a 80s night club would go had its run-ins with the law do to drugs, but in 1996 a party promoter was convicted of murdering a known drug dealer at the club. The police then closed the club and the Limelight was reopened in 2003 renamed "Avalon," which was a concert hall and a night club. The Avalon closed it's doors for good in 2007 and the Limelight Market opened its doors in 2010.

Modalistas is one the newest little markets that you can find here. It is a small boutique tucked away in the corner across from Hunter Boots and a yummy chocolate cart but it truly is a prime spot for it's lovely clothes. Modalistas is filled with small designer clothes and unique stand out pieces.

The event which included a fashion show was just so different and fantastic. Only something that I would expect from the Limelight Market. All the girls looked stunning and each piece was better then the next. It was a great way to showcase what this small boutique offers.

I was 100% in love with the 2 in one leather jacket ($225). This piece came with a long knitted hooded vest which is detachable from the leather jacket. This jacket comes in both black and a light brown color. If you love accessories their jewelry pieces will make you go crazy and probably bankrupt. The Circle Necklace ($175) is the coolest piece of jewelery and is a head turner. This whole boutique offers nothing but head turning pieces and the employees there are more then willing to help you pick out the perfect piece for you and your wardrobe.

Another fantastic part about Modalistas, you don't need to be in New York to shop their boutique. Their online boutique modalistas.com, offers a unique online shopping experience. One of the features they offer on their website is its Made to Order Program which means garments are specially made by their designers for their customers. Of course since these pieces are original designs they will run you more then what else is offered on their site.

If you live in New York or are ever visiting New York make sure to go to the Limelight Market and check out Modalistas. You will not be disappointed by the shopping center or this boutique. I look forward to seeing this boutique really blossom.
